Acne
isn’t caused by bad hygiene, oily foods,
or chocolate. It’s a genetic disease, often
triggered by the hormones of adolescence, that
causes follicles in the skin to get plugged and
then infected. The Dermatology Group’s physicians
are very experienced in treating even the most
severe, stubborn cases of acne. Unlike drugstore
or “infomercial” remedies, our treatment
plans are customized for your specific condition
and lifestyle. Topical treatments are effective
for mild cases, opening up the plugged follicles,
killing bacteria, and removing excess oil. However,
these surface treatments don’t eliminate
the root cause.

Fortunately, there is a virtual cure for acne, as
effective as penicillin against pneumonia. Accutane
was approved by the FDA in 1978, and over its 35-year
history, the drug has proven to be an effective,
safe cure for acne. The Dermatology Group alone
has treated more than 10,000 patients with Accutane;
95% of those were cured for a lifetime with just
one 6-month course of medication. Accutane is safe
and effective for treating acne’s root cause.
The medication is a purified form of vitamin A,
related to retinol. It works by finding the vitamin
A receptors in skin, decreasing the size of oil
glands and stopping production of the abnormal sticky
cells that plug follicles. The Accutane molecule,
unlike vitamin A from food, has been changed so
it doesn’t accumulate in fat cells. Instead,
it is virtually cleared from the body within 8 days
after the last dose. |

Accutane
has only one serious, irreversible side effect,
and that occurs only in pregnant women: It has a
high risk of causing birth defects when taken during
pregnancy. Therefore, we administer two pregnancy
tests before prescribing the medication, and require
patients to use two forms of birth control until
30 days after finishing the medication. There are
no long-term effects on either fertility or fetal
health; the only risk is to babies whose mothers
took the drug during pregnancy. Women can safely
become pregnant 30 days after their last pill.Accutane
can have minor side effects, which we’ll discuss
with you at your appointment. The most common ones
are dry eyes and headache; these are treatable and
generally improve as you keep taking the medication.
Very rarely, someone notices a change in mood after
starting Accutane; when that happens, we stop the
medication. All these side effects go away when
you stop taking the medicine. |

In our experience, some patients have mistaken ideas
about Accutane. We’ll sit down with you at
your appointment to separate fact from fiction.
The Dermatology Group’s medical staff are
very experienced in administering and monitoring
Accutane treatment. If we prescribe it for you,
you’ll have regular check-ups so we can monitor
your progress and adjust the treatment if necessary.
