Mohs
micrographic surgery provides the highest cure rate for nonmetastasized
skin cancers, with the best cosmetic result. This advanced
technique involves removing the visible cancer, then examining
the removed skin under a microscope. The cancer is carefully
mapped so the surgeon can remove cancerous cells while leaving
most of the adjacent tissue. Mohs surgery is especially effective
in treating recurrent and aggressive cancers, as well as those
on cosmetically sensitive areas, because it can virtually
eliminate cancer cells while causing minimal damage to the
surrounding skin. However, most melanomas are removed using
more traditional techniques. Dr. Stephen Spates, our Mohs
surgeon, is a board-certified dermatologist who completed
a fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery. During his fellowship,
Dr. Spates received specialized training in cosmetic closures
and is able to offer the most desirable cosmetic result available.
He is sought out by many local dermatologists & surgeons
as a consultant and expert. Dr. Spates attracts patients from
all over the tri-state area because he is known as a meticulous,
thorough, and thoughtful surgeon. He limits the number of
patients he sees each day to ensure that each one feels well
cared-for.
On average, patients are in our office for two to three hours.
