Q&A with Board-Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Charles Elias
This month’s Derm Group spotlight, we focus on the Derm Group’s newest board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Charles Elias, from our West Orange, NJ location.
Q: What inspired you to study medicine, and more specifically, dermatology?
A: My passion for medicine started with my parents, who are both doctors, and continued
with my love for biology. In medical school, I was fascinated by a dermatologist’s ability
to assess a rash or mole and make an accurate diagnosis, often just by looking at it.
Q: You received your Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Rowan University. Who was your most influential professor and why?
A: My most influential professor during medical school was a pediatrician who taught me
how to approach children in a friendly and non-threatening manner. I was able to
translate this lesson to all of my patients and it has helped me to establish meaningful
connections with them.
Q: What question(s) do you wish patients asked when receiving care for their skin?
A: I always want my patients to leave the office knowing why they have a certain condition
and how best to treat it. If I have not made those two issues clear, I implore them to ask
me to clarify.
Q: What piece of advice do you regularly press upon your patients?
A: I always strongly advocate for good general skin care including daily sunscreen and
Q: What new technology or treatment are you most interested in right now?
A: I am interested in the newer devices aimed at body contouring and fat reduction.
Q: What was one of your biggest challenges with a patient’s symptoms and how did you overcome it?
A: Dermatology can be humbling and one of the biggest challenges that I’ve seen is a
patient with months of unexplained itching. Sometimes, you have to swallow your pride
and open a textbook to reread and relearn things that you do not encounter every day.
Imagine my surprise when I found that my patient had strongyloidiasis (a roundworm
Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A: There is nothing more rewarding than for a patient to come back and thank me for
helping them with their condition.
Q: What made you join The Derm Group?
A: The Derm Group has been around for a very long time and has a strong presence in
northern NJ. The size of the group allows for me to concentrate on performing my job of
caring for patients to the best of my ability.
Q: What has been your biggest success story to date?
A: Having just graduated from residency a few months ago, I can say that the last 8 years
of my medical education have been challenging and immensely rewarding. I am proud of
my accomplishments and look forward to doing bigger and better things.
Q: When you are not helping patients, what do you enjoy doing on your time off?
A: My biggest joy in life is watching my 2-year-old daughter as she grows. As you can
imagine, she occupies most of time off of work.
