Q&A with Board-Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Marina Jungwirth
This month’s Derm Group spotlight, we sit down with Dr. Marina Jungwirth, the newest dermatologist at the Derm Group’s Princeton location.
Q: What brought you to study medicine, and more specifically, dermatology?
A: Since I was a child, I have always been intrigued by the intricacies of the human body. I fell in love with the visual aspects of dermatology. I love being able to make a diagnosis just by looking at a patient’s skin. Moreover, I love that dermatology allows me to see patients of all ages and practice medical, surgical, and cosmetic medicine!
Q: You spent your undergraduate years at Princeton and graduated from medical school from Harvard. Who was your most influential professor and why?
A: I loved working with my dermatology mentor at Mass General Hospital. She ran the consultative dermatology service there and her passion for dermatology was contagious. She was so excited and grateful to be at work every day! But, what was most admirable, was her compassion for patients. She always made sure to lend a helping hand and offer a shoulder to lean on for those in need, even if they weren’t her patients!
Q: What question(s) do you wish patients asked when receiving care for their skin?
A: Prevention is key! I wish patients inquired more about ways to prevent skin cancers, photoaging, and other cutaneous issues before they become concerns!
Q:What piece of advice do you regularly press upon your patients?
A: Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! It can be raining outside but always have at least SPF 30 on sun-exposed areas daily. There are ultraviolet rays coming down through the clouds!
What new technology or treatment are you most interested in right now?
There is a lot of new and exciting research coming out on platelet-rich-plasma. There is still a lot to learn about how it works and potential applications, but it seems to have a lot of potential.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
I love, love, love simply chatting with my patients. Being a physician is a such a privileged position. Patient’s instinctively trust you with the most intimate details of their life, and to me, this is the greatest honor.
What made you join The Derm Group?
During my interview, I had a great chat over breakfast with the company’s CEO and our visions for the practice completely aligned: an innovative patient-focused practice that would give our patients a concierge experience paired with state-of-the-art medicine!
What has been your biggest success story to date?
I had a patient come in with a severe rash that covered 90% of their body. This rash prevented them from working, driving, and going to school. It was a tough battle, but we were able to clear up the rash. They are now back to school, driving, and finally have smile on their face!
When you are not helping patients, what do you enjoy doing on your time off?
I love to spend time with my family and friends, cook, go to concerts, musicals, and museums, and travel the world!
