It is possible to look awake, alert, and youthful without surgery. BOTOX Cosmetic is the preferred nonsurgical treatment worldwide for the correction of facial expression lines and creases around the eyes. The Derm Group offers BOTOX and 3 other neuromodulators—Dysport, XEOMIN, and Jeuveau—to help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in a way that looks natural.

Understanding Your Treatment

The board-certified physicians at The Derm Group believe providing you with important information about your procedure can help you make an informed choice regarding your treatment. Below you will find answers to common questions about the injectable neuromodulators we offer.

How Do BOTOX, Dysport, XEOMIN & Jeuveau Work?

The active ingredient in BOTOX and the other neuromodulators targets specific muscles by blocking the nerve signals to them. This results in the muscle relaxing, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Repeated muscle movements from facial expressions create dynamic wrinkles. Smiling, squinting, and frowning etches lines into the skin that become more pronounced over time. These types of wrinkles are different than static wrinkles, which develop as our skin produces less collagen and elastin and the effects of sun exposure and other environmental factors take their toll. Different treatments address different types of wrinkles.

What Does BOTOX Treat?

The most common dynamic wrinkles targeted by BOTOX injections include:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Vertical frown lines between the brows (also called “the 11s”)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Nasal squint lines (“bunny lines”)
  • Lines on the neck

Our expert injectors use precisely targeted injections that don’t create an unnatural appearance.

BOTOX, Dysport, XEOMIN, and Jeuveau: Which Is Best for You?

BOTOX has been on the market longer than Dysport, XEOMIN, or Jeuveau, but all 4 products have received FDA approval for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. Jeuveau, the most recent neuromodulator to come to the market, is approved by the FDA to treat glabellar lines (frown lines). Even though the products are very similar, our injectors may recommend using a certain product for one area and a different product to address other wrinkles.

This chart can help you understand which product might be best for you. When considering the cost of each treatment, keep in mind that it may require more units of one product to create the desired results. For example, you may need more units of Dysport than of the other products.

What to Expect During BOTOX Treatment?

Our skilled injectors at The Derm Group have the expertise needed to safely and effectively administer injectable treatments that help you achieve the look you want—whether subtle or dramatic. We first thoroughly cleanse your skin and then apply numbing cream for increased comfort, if desired. They then make several tiny injections into the targeted muscle or muscles. Our injectors use very precise, controlled techniques to ensure that your results look natural.

Your procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the area or areas being treated. Depending on the product used, you should see initial results within 2 to 4 days with Dysport and XEOMIN, or 3 to 7 days with BOTOX. The results typically last between 3 to 5 months, so we recommend periodic treatments to seamlessly maintain the results.

Is BOTOX Painful?

These injections are typically not considered painful because they are quick and performed with a fine needle. We prep the treatment area with a numbing cream to minimize the potential for any discomfort.

What To Avoid After Treatment?

While there is no downtime needed after a BOTOX treatment, we recommend taking the following precautions:

  • Do not lie down for at least 4 hours after treatment.
  • Avoid rubbing or massaging treated areas for the first few hours.
  • Postpone strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption for 24 hours before and after treatment.

Can You Combine BOTOX, Dysport, XEOMIN, & Jeuveau With Other Treatments?

Combining neuromodulator injections with other facial rejuvenation treatments can create more comprehensive results. Patients concerned about static wrinkles caused by lost volume and sun damage may benefit from dermal fillers such as those in the Restylane® or JUVÉDERM® product families. Combining BOTOX with dermal filler injections can also create a temporary lifting effect on the skin in a procedure that is often referred to as a “liquid facelift.” Skin resurfacing treatments may also be used to enhance the quality of the skin, making it smoother, softer, and more radiant.

What’s the Difference Between BOTOX and Dermal Fillers?

  • BOTOX and other neuromodulators smooth away lines like crow’s feet and frown lines that are caused by the contractions of facial muscles. Results develop gradually within a few days of treatment.
  • Dermal fillers smooth away lines and folds caused by aging and sun damage such as lines around the lips and smile lines (nasolabial folds). They also add and restore volume to areas of the face such as the cheeks, temples, under the eyes, and the lips. Results are immediate.

Best Age to Start BOTOX Injections

Most women and men get their first BOTOX treatment when they are bothered by lines and creases caused by facial muscle contractions. Depending on genetics, sun exposure, and personal preference, patients may be in their 40s, 50s, and up. Many people in their mid-20s and 30s have these treatments as a proactive measure to keep lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place.

Are BOTOX, Dysport, XEOMIN, and Jeuveau Safe?

Botulinum toxin type A is considered a safe, minimally invasive way to smooth dynamic wrinkles. BOTOX—which was approved by the FDA years earlier than the other 3 products—has a remarkable track record for safety when an experienced, trained provider makes the injections. The primary side effects of these treatments include redness, bruising, or soreness at the injection site.

Alternative Uses for BOTOX

BOTOX, which was originally approved by the FDA to treat droopy eyelids (“lazy eye”), is now approved to treat multiple conditions. These uses can help greatly improve the quality of a patient’s life. The conditions BOTOX is used to treat include:

  • Excessive underarm sweating—A condition called hyperhidrosis causes some people to have overactive sweat glands in their underarms. It can be an embarrassing and costly issue for women and men who have to constantly replace stained shirts or blouses.
  • Migraine headaches—People who suffer from chronic migraines often have a difficult time finding effective relief using medication. BOTOX injections have helped many migraine sufferers because the treatment temporarily relaxes muscles that have been linked to the condition. If you have migraines more than 15 times a month, BOTOX injections can reduce the frequency of the headaches.
  • Masseter reduction—The masseter muscle is one of a trio of muscles used when we chew food. It is in the cheek area and when it is overdeveloped the masseter muscle can cause your face to appear square rather than slim and triangular. BOTOX is used for jawline slimming because it temporarily relaxes the masseter, so it doesn’t appear so pronounced.
  • Gummy smile—If your upper lip lifts high enough to expose the gums above your top teeth when you smile, BOTOX injections can prevent the lip from lifting so high.

None of the other 3 neuromodulators has been approved by the FDA for these uses.

Obtaining a natural, more youthful appearance requires the expertise of a skilled injector. Our physicians oversee all injections to ensure that your results look subtle and natural.
