It is possible to look awake, alert, and youthful without surgery. BOTOX Cosmetic is the preferred nonsurgical treatment worldwide for the correction of facial expression lines and creases around the eyes. The Derm Group offers BOTOX and 2 other neuromodulators called Dysport and XEOMIN to help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in a way that looks natural.

Understanding Your Treatment

The board-certified physicians at The Derm Group believe providing you with important information about your procedure can help you make an informed choice regarding your treatment. Below you will find answers to common questions about the injectable neuromodulators we offer.

BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN: Which Is Best for You?

BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN are each made from botulinum toxin type A and temporarily alter the nerve impulses of targeted muscles, reducing or eliminating wrinkles created by muscle contractions. The 3 products are manufactured by different companies (Allergan is the maker of BOTOX; Dysport is made by Galderma, and Merz Aesthetics makes XEOMIN). BOTOX has been on the market longer than either Dysport or XEOMIN, but all 3 products received FDA approval for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. Even though they’re very similar, our injectors may recommend using a certain product for one area and a different product to address other wrinkles.

Dynamic Wrinkles vs. Static Wrinkles

Repeated muscle movements that occur when our faces change expressions create dynamic wrinkles. Smiling, squinting, and frowning etches lines into the skin that become more pronounced over time. These types of wrinkles are different than static wrinkles, which develop as our skin produces less collagen and elastin and the effects of sun exposure and other enviromental factors take their toll. Different treatments address different types of wrinkles.

BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN block the nerve impulses of injected muscles, temporarily paralyzing the movements that cause wrinkles. Horizontal forehead lines, perpendicular frown lines between the brows (also called “the 11s”), crow’s feet, nasal squint lines, and lines around the neck are the most common treatment targets.

A session of carefully administered injections from one of the medical professionals at The Derm Group will smooth and soften wrinkles, giving you a younger looking appearance. Many other conditions – such as chin dimples, neck lines, and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis)– can be corrected with these products, also.

Patients concerned about static wrinkles caused by lost volume and sun damage may benefit from dermal fillers such as the Restylane® or JUVÉDERM® product families. Combining BOTOX with dermal filler injections can also create a temporary lifting effect on the skin in a procedure that is often referred to as a “liquid facelift.” Skin resurfacing treatments may also be used to enhance the quality of the skin, making it smoother, softer, and more radiant.

Your Procedure

The highly trained healthcare providers at The Derm Group have the expertise needed to safely and effectively administer injectable treatments that help you achieve the look you want – whether subtle or dramatic. We first thoroughly cleanse your skin and then apply numbing cream for increased comfort, if desired. The provider then makes several tiny injections into the targeted muscle or muscles. Our physicians use very precise, controlled injection methods to ensure that your results look natural and never over-done.

Your procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the area or areas being treated. Depending on the product used, you should see initial results within 2 to 4 days with Dysport and XEOMIN, or 3 to 7 days with BOTOX. The results typically last between 3 to 5 months, so we recommend periodic treatments to seamlessly maintain the results.

Is it safe?

The safety of botulinum toxin type A has been thoroughly researched and studied for at least 2 decades. In fact, before the product was used for cosmetic purposes, it had a long history of use for medical conditions – such as the treatment of muscle spasms and neurological disorders. Millions of people have had BOTOX injections with very few complications.

What are the side effects?

The side effects associated with BOTOX, Dysport, and XEOMIN are minimal but may include temporary bruising, swelling, or redness that will resolve within a few days. BOTOX and the other products do not affect the nerves responsible for sensation, so there is no numbness or change in feeling in the treated areas. In very rare cases, the injections may cause eyelid droopiness, but this is temporary and can be treated with medicated eye drops.

Obtaining a natural, more youthful appearance requires the expertise of a skilled injector. Our physicians oversee all injections to ensure that your results look subtle and natural.
