For those suffering from severe underarm sweating – a condition that is clinically referred to as hyperhidrosis – BOTOX® injections can help. The FDA has approved BOTOX to treat hyperhidrosis when antiperspirants or other medications fail. The Derm Group offers this alternative treatment for those who want to be free from the physical discomfort and emotional embarrassment caused by excessive sweating.
In order to begin your BOTOX treatment, you must first meet with one of our board-certified physicians. If you have additional questions or would like to speak with one of our board-certified dermatologists, call (973) 571-2121.
Understanding Your Treatment
Research has shown that using BOTOX to manage hyperhidrosis is promising. The Derm Group often performs BOTOX injections for those experiencing profuse sweating of the underarms, hands, and feet. Our board-certified physicians first evaluate each individual to diagnosis hyperhidrosis and then customize a treatment based on personal needs. The number of BOTOX units used, injection site, and frequency of treatment will vary with each patient.
How does BOTOX treat excessive underarm sweating?
BOTOX is a purified protein that blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. By interrupting this chemical messenger, BOTOX prevents sweat production at the injection site.
Will multiple treatments be needed to treat my hyperhidrosis?
A single treatment of several injections is typically sufficient to reduce sweating for several months; however, follow-up sessions are usually necessary to maintain results.
Are the injections painful?
Before your procedure, a topical anesthetic may first be applied for increased comfort. Underarm injections are well tolerated by most patients. The hands and feet are more sensitive than the underarms, so these injections can cause more discomfort.
What happens during treatment?
BOTOX injections, administered using a very fine needle, are made in the skin near the sweat glands responsible for perspiration. The standard dose of BOTOX is 50 units per underarm but may vary depending on the patient. Treatment time may take anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the injection site.
How long is recovery?
There is little to no downtime associated with BOTOX; most patients are able to return to their normal routine immediately. Hold off on applying deoderant until the next day and avoid strenuous exercise, heat exposure, and anything else that might cause you to sweat for 48 hours.
Using BOTOX to treat hyperhidrosis is most effective when performed by a knowledgeable physician who is experienced with the procedure. The board-certified physicians at The Derm Group are highly skilled in using proper injection techniques that dispense the right amount of BOTOX into the appropriate location.

Is it safe?
Botulinum toxin type A has been researched and studied for over a decade. BOTOX has a proven history of safety and was commonly used to treat muscle spasms and neurological disorders before it was approved for cosmetic purposes. In 2004, BOTOX (botulinum toxin type A) received FDA approval for the temporary control of primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Millions of people have had BOTOX injections with very few complications.
What are the side effects?
Most patients do not experience severe unwanted side effects after treatment with BOTOX. However, localized pain or mild bruising may occur near the injection site for some people. Although uncommon, there is a chance that BOTOX could cause compensatory sweating in other areas of the body.
Does using BOTOX in the armpit or foot area help with odor?
Underarm and foot odor are related to the moisture from sweat. Because BOTOX significantly reduces sweating in treated areas, odor is typically reduced or eliminated as well.
What else can BOTOX treat?
In addition to addressing excessive sweating, BOTOX has a variety of other uses including:
- Facial aging when combined with dermal fillers (liquid facelift)
- Enlarged masseter muscles (jawline reduction)
- Gummy smile
- Migraine headaches
