Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacials

IPL Best For:

  • Sun damage
  • Enlarged pores
  • Irregular pigmentation
  • Broken blood vessels

Procedure Time:About 30-45 min

Results:1 year or longer

Specific skin discolorations including broken capillaries, age spots, and rosacea can be corrected with intense pulsed light (IPL). This non-ablative treatment uses multiple wavelengths of pulsed light in combination with laser technology to gently and effectively penetrate the skin’s deeper layers. The result is clearer, brighter, and more evenly colored skin with minimal recovery time.

Understanding Your TreatmenT

Photorejuvenation with IPL is much gentler than previous-generation lasers and can normally be performed on a lunch hour break with no noticeable signs of treatment. IPL is administered using a lamplike device that emits high-intensity pulses of broadband light which target and destroy problematic skin cells, particularly those containing excess pigment. Because IPL is non-ablative, the surrounding healthy skin cells are left undamaged and little discomfort is experienced during the procedure. IPL is often suitable for many areas of the body, including the face, hands, neck, and chest.

Who Is an Ideal IPL Patient?

The ideal candidate for IPL photofacial treatments is someone concerned about age-related skin conditions such as discoloration and fine lines. Additionally, people with acne or injury scars, rosacea, age spots, and freckles can benefit from a series of IPL laser treatments. People with fair skin are the best candidates for the treatment.

What Are the Long-Term Benefits of IPL?

You can see immediate results of IPL treatments with decreased skin discoloration, but regular IPL procedures can produce long-term benefits that help the skin look healthier and more youthful. These maintenance treatments promote the growth of new collagen and help minimize the effects of sun damage. Our bodies produce less collagen as we age, so stimulating new collagen growth is an excellent way to keep skin smooth and glowing.

Is an IPL Photofacial Painful?

Some people experience a prickling sensation or light pinch on the skin during this process, but most find the procedure very tolerable and do not require topical anesthetic. In most cases, a gel is applied to the treatment area and protective eyewear is provided. A hand-held device emitting pulses of light is then gently passed over the treatment area. One session takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the area treated.

How IPL Minimizes Age Spots and Freckle

Many people begin noticing age spots (or sunspots) around age 30 and wonder how to get rid of them. Wearing sunscreen daily is the first step to take, but IPL is an ideal procedure to help reverse superficial signs of sun damage. IPL treatments target pigment, so dark spots on lighter skin fade with each treatment.

Can IPL Treat Acne

IPL is a safe and effective treatment that can clear active acne outbreaks. By delivering intense bursts of light into the skin, IPL photofacials can help reduce acne eruptions. IPL is also used to minimize the appearance of acne scars

What Are the Side Effects of IPL?

Immediately after IPL treatment, your skin should feel softer and appear more vibrant. Some individuals may experience minor skin irritations such as redness, blotchiness, or itchiness; however, these symptoms are temporary and normally subside within a few hours. Dark spots may flake and peel in the weeks following IPL treatment as part of the natural skin renewal process.

IPL can cause a heightened sensitivity to UV rays. Your physician may suggest that you apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect your new, healthy skin.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

The number of treatments will depend on your skin condition and aesthetic goals, and The Derm Group will customize a treatment program based on these specific skin concerns. Typically, most people require 2 to 6 treatments at 3-week intervals for complete results.

Can I Combine IPL With Other Treatments?

To improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles, or to tighten lax facial skin, many people benefit from laser skin resurfacing treatments. Advanced skincare products can also be used to enhance or maintain the results of treatment.
