Understanding Your Treatment

Laser resurfacing works deep inside the dermis to stimulate the formation of collagen and elastin – two essential components for youthful-looking skin. A focused laser beam emitting short pulses of light is used to ablate superficial layers of the skin while simultaneously heating the underlying tissues and promoting collagen growth. This process activates the body’s natural healing process, thereby creating new, healthy skin that is smoother and firmer.

Because the laser energy works deep within the skin’s layers, the results may not be immediately apparent; however, improvements are long-lasting. Many of our patients enjoy continuing enhancements for up to 1 year after their treatment.

How Much Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Cost?

The cost of laser skin resurfacing treatments depends on the patient’s skin condition and the intensity of the procedure.

What type of laser is used?

The Derm Group uses either the ProFractional™ laser from Sciton® or the CO2RE® system from Candela for laser resurfacing procedures. Our board-certified physicians selected these 2 lasers because they provide the flexibility needed to address a wide range of skin conditions. The ProFractional laser offers substantial results with less harm to the skin, while the Candela CO2 laser is often best for treating moderate to deep wrinkles, sun damage or patients with moderate to severe acne scarring.

The Derm Group also offers vaginal rejuvenation treatments using the CO2RE Intima laser for women concerned about vaginal health. Our physicians deliver gentle laser energy to the vaginal wall that stimulates a healing response and enhances moisture levels in the vaginal canal. This results in remodeling of the tissue fibers and restores flexibility and shape. The procedure delivers both immediate and long-lasting relief in a comfortable, nonsurgical, proven treatment.

What happens during treatment?

During laser skin resurfacing, the skin is first cleansed and may be numbed with a local anesthetic for enhanced comfort. The laser device is then applied to the treatment area, which may cause a light “prickling” sensation. Individual treatments take about 20 minutes, and most patients are able to return to work within 2 – 3 days.

What are the side effects?

Some mild to moderate redness and swelling is common for a few days following laser skin resurfacing. Although this is only temporary and shouldn’t last more than a few days, makeup can be applied after 2 – 3 days to camouflage any skin discoloration. Sunscreen is usually recommended for several weeks after treatment to protect the new skin.

Is it safe?

Laser skin resurfacing is safe when performed by a qualified specialist. The board-certified physicians at The Derm Group oversee all laser procedures to ensure that they are performed properly. Additionally, treatments are customized to individual skin types in order to minimize any potential complications.

What other options are available for skin rejuvenation?

Those who enjoy the benefits of laser skin resurfacing may also like skin resurfacing procedures such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels. If you’re concerned about loose neck or facial skin but aren’t ready for plastic surgery, Ultherapy® is a nonsurgical skin tightening treatment. To treat other age-related concerns like deep facial creases in the forehead or around the eyes, BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers may also be recommended.
