Understanding Your Treatment
The purpose of dermatologic surgery is to remove unwanted lesions from the skin or to repair the function or appearance of skin tissue. Depending on your individual diagnosis, our physicians may recommend traditional removal, cryosurgery (freezing), laser removal, Mohs surgery, or laser surgery. Your physician will explain all of your options and help you to choose the treatment you feel most comfortable with.
What are my surgical options?
Standard excisional surgery involves removing unhealthy skin tissues or lesions using a scalpel. This procedure is often used to remove benign lesions and many forms of skin cancer.
Dermatologic Surgery Treatment Locations
Cryosurgery uses liquid nitrogen to freeze skin lesions, causing the dead tissue to eventually slough off the skin. Your physician may recommend cryosurgery for the treatment of early skin cancers or precancerous conditions such as actinic keratoses.
A high-intensity beam of light vaporizes abnormal growths while leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. This procedure causes few unwanted side effects and is usually used to treat photo-damaged and aging skin in a cosmetically elegant manner.
Mohs surgery is an advanced surgical technique that provides the highest cure rate for basal cell and squamous cell cancers. During this surgery, your physician carefully maps the cancer, so that the harmful cells are removed and healthy cells left intact.
