Liposuction

Even if you lead an active lifestyle and eat a healthy diet, unwanted fat tends to accumulate in certain trouble spots on the body. Liposuction performed by one of our board-certified plastic surgeons provides an ideal solution for most men and women.

Benefits of Liposuction

Liposuction is a versatile body contouring procedure that can sculpt various areas of the body. Liposuction isn’t a weight-loss procedure and good candidates should be at or near the weight they want to maintain before scheduling liposuction surgery. Liposuction is great for slimming areas including:

  • Abdomen
  • Waist
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Neck
  • Knees
  • Upper arms

Stubborn fat in these areas can make women and men self-conscious about their bodies, even if they exercise regularly and watch what they eat.

Your Liposuction Procedure

The number of liposuction techniques now available can be confusing. More important than the liposuction method used is the skill and experience of the surgeon performing the procedure. We use tumescent liposuction, power-assisted liposuction (PAL), and a method called the super-wet technique. Tumescent lipo is often called traditional liposuction.

All of these liposuction methods involve inserting a thin tube called a cannula through small incisions. The treatment area or areas are infused with a solution that includes both an anesthetic and epinephrine, which helps minimize bleeding and causes fatty tissue to swell. Your surgeon then manually moves the vibrating cannula back and forth to break up the tissue and suction the fat. The procedure can take between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the size of the treatment area or if multiple areas are targeted.

Combining Procedures

Liposuction is commonly combined with a tummy tuck and cosmetic breast surgery as part of a Mommy Makeover, a surgery that addresses the concerns of women who have had children.

Recovery

The downtime associated with liposuction also depends on the size of the treatment area and the amount of fat removed during the procedure. Liposuction is an outpatient procedure, so plan to have someone drive you home after the surgery. Compression garments are worn to help enhance the healing process. We also encourage patients to get up and walk around the house as soon as possible to help boost circulation and minimize the risk of complications.

Expect to return to work within a few days but plan on avoiding strenuous physical activities for about 2 weeks. You’ll begin seeing results almost immediately and will notice continued improvement as your bruising and swelling resolve. Few of our patients experience significant complications, but we encourage you to contact us with any concerns you may have during the recovery.
