Tummy Tuck

Tri-State area women and men who want a flatter, firmer abdomen choose the board-certified plastic surgeons at The Derm Group for tummy tuck surgery. Also called abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat and tightens abdominal muscles, creating a contoured midsection. It’s especially popular among women who have had children, but it can help both men and women after significant weight loss.

Benefits of a Tummy Tuck

Extreme weight fluctuations can stretch the skin in the abdominal area. When skin loses its elasticity, such as after pregnancy, it can’t shrink back to fit the body’s contours even if you exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. In order to remove the excess skin that often makes people self-conscious about their bodies, a tummy tuck is necessary. This is often true following bariatric surgery that produces dramatic weight loss. The benefits of a tummy tuck include:

  • Flattening a bulging tummy
  • Repairing abdominal muscles separated during pregnancy
  • Creating a sculpted waistline
  • Eliminating excess skin

The specific benefits depend on each patient’s particular concerns, which our plastic surgeons discuss during the consultation.

Your Tummy Tuck Procedure

An abdominoplasty is performed using a general anesthetic. Your surgeon makes a horizontal incision just above the pubic area so that it can be concealed by underwear or a swimsuit. There is a second incision around the navel. After making the incisions, the surgeon lifts the skin and, if needed, repairs the separated abdominal muscles (a condition called diastasis recti), then removes excess skin. Liposuction is typically used to remove excess fat and ensure a smooth contour. Before closing the incision, the surgeon repositions the belly button and ensures it’s aesthetically pleasing. Your surgeon then places surgical drains that help prevent fluid from accumulating at the surgery site during the first week of your recovery.

Patients usually spend the first night in the hospital, but in some cases return home the day of the procedure. Many women who have had children choose a popular combination procedure called a mommy makeover, which may include breast enhancement in addition to a tummy tuck.

Mini Tummy Tuck

In certain cases, the excess skin and fat are limited to the area below the belly button. This is fairly uncommon but can occur. The modified tummy tuck—often called a mini tummy tuck—involves a shorter horizontal incision and no incision around the belly button.

The healing process is different for each patient but you can expect your recovery to take at least 2 weeks. You’ll need help with household chores and child care if you have young children at home. We want you to avoid lifting anything during the initial recovery period, including babies or toddlers. If you work in a job that’s physically demanding, expect to need about 3 to 4 weeks of downtime.

Our surgeons encourage patients to take brief walks starting when they return home—even just around the house—to minimize the risk of blood clots. Prescription pain medication should help you remain comfortable. A special compression garment should be worn as much as possible during your recovery to reduce swelling and enhance the results.
